Have you ever wondered why life often feels like a battlefield? Why even the most devoted Christians face struggles, conflict, and spiritual opposition? According to Derek Prince’s insightful book War in Heaven, the answer lies not just on earth but in the heavens above.
Many believers imagine heaven as a place of perfect peace, glowing light, and eternal worship—and yes, that is certainly true of the third heaven, the very dwelling place of God. But Prince reminds us that not all heavens are currently peaceful. The second heaven, described in Revelation and other scriptures, is a realm of conflict—where spiritual warfare rages, angelic battles occur, and the forces of darkness seek to resist the purposes of God.
🔍 The Three Heavens
The Bible points to the existence of three heavens:
- The first heaven is the visible sky—the natural heavens.
- The second heaven is a spiritual realm where angelic and demonic activity occurs.
- The third heaven, as Paul described in 2 Corinthians 12, is paradise, where God dwells in unmatched holiness.
It’s in that second heaven that much of the spiritual warfare takes place—a reality many Christians overlook. Contrary to popular belief, Satan is not yet bound in hell. He still operates in the heavenly realms, described as the “accuser of the brethren,” launching constant attacks against God’s people (Revelation 12:10).
🙅🏽♂️ Life Is Not a Playground—It’s a Battleground
Prince doesn’t shy away from the hard truth: life for the Christian is warfare. In 2 Timothy 2:3–4, Paul calls us to “endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” The Christian is not on the defensive; we are called to take the offensive in spiritual warfare. Jesus Himself said, “the gates of hell shall not prevail against [the Church]” (Matthew 16:18)—suggesting we are to break through, not shrink back.
This battle is not against flesh and blood. It’s against rulers, authorities, and powers in the spiritual realm (Ephesians 6:12). That means your real enemy isn’t your coworker, your spouse, or the politician on TV—it’s the devil and his schemes.
🧨 Rebellion: The Root of All War
According to Prince, the ultimate cause of all conflict—both in the heavenlies and on earth—is rebellion. The first rebel was not Adam or Eve, but Lucifer, a high-ranking angel who led a portion of the angels in rebellion against God (Isaiah 14; Ezekiel 28). That rebellion did not begin on earth—it started in heaven.
And just as rebellion spread through heaven and then to the Garden of Eden, it now infects humanity. That same spirit of defiance toward God manifests in wars, addictions, family breakdowns, and societal unrest. But God has a solution.
🙌 God’s Secret Plan: Victory Through the Cross
In response to the rebellion, God enacted His “secret plan”—Jesus Christ. The “seed of the woman” (Genesis 3:15) would one day crush the head of the serpent, Satan. Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection were the decisive blow in that battle. And now, those who trust in Him have access to total victory.
“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
—1 Corinthians 15:57
💡 So What Does This Mean for You?
If you feel like life is a war, it’s because it is. But you are not called to live in fear or confusion. You have been given armor, weapons, and most importantly, the victory of Jesus.
✅ Take your stand.
✅ Put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6).
✅ Resist the devil—and he will flee.
✅ Align your life with God’s will, not rebellion.
✅ Pray, worship, and walk in obedience—these are weapons of war.
🌎 And remember: this battle will not last forever. One day, Satan will be cast down permanently. Until then, stand firm in the grace and power of God.
Let heaven’s victory become your daily reality. You are not just surviving the war—you are more than a conqueror through Him who loved you.
Very deep and insightful
Now my eyes are open. Just learnt from this article that the heavens is an abode for different spirits, both the good and the bad. I now know how and where to fight from in my daily spiritual warfare. Thanks for this mighty revelation.
We are overcomers
The war in Heaven is not for the third heaven but second heaven where there is accuser of brethren. The first heaven is the visible sky,the second heaven is a spiritual realm where angelic and demonic activity occurs and the third heaven is the paradise where God dwells in holiness. Believers does not need to entertain fear or confusion since we have Christ in us, Jesus Christ is our victory and surely we have victory in Him and we are victorious in all our ways.
We should always take our stand in Him,pit on the armour of Christ and we will be victory in Him.
WOW, this is eye-opening.
Very inspiring
Derek Prince’s “War in Heaven” teaches that the Christian life is a spiritual battle waged not only on Earth but also in the second heaven, a realm of angelic conflict. The root cause of this and all conflict is rebellion against God, which began with Lucifer. However, through Jesus Christ’s victory on the cross, believers are empowered to actively engage in this warfare using spiritual weapons and overcome the forces of darkness.
It teaches us Pride is a Major Pitfall: Lucifer’s downfall was due to pride, and it remains a significant temptation for Christians, particularly in the ministry
It teaches us the Power of Prayer: Intercession and ruling by prayer can impact the spiritual realm and change situations on earth, as seen in Daniel’s experience (Daniel 10:2-3).
Wonderful
Derek Prince’s highlighted the conflict between good and evil forces. He emphasized the victorious life we have in Jesus Christ. How to live in the reality of the life of Christ. Rev 12 vs 7.
Olayinka Ijalana
Derek Prince in his book, War in heaven that Christian life is warfare as Paul in Timothy 2 vs 3-4 admonished believers to be a good soldier of Christ. He also reminded Christians that the victory of Matthew 16 vs 18 that the gate of hell shall not prevail against the church is a standing order for believers.
Topic war in heaven.
Derek Prince stress on true Christian or believers that children of God suffered and the life of a true children of God are battle field.
He talks about first -thrid heaven and what we are seeing now.
We should take up the shield of war in Ephesians, and also rebellion is against God, and the rebellion started from heaven Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28.
But we have total victory which is Jesus Christ. Gen 3:15.
Zion
From the writer, he let us know that life is a battlefield. That even the most devoted christian face struggles, conflict and spiritual opposition.
He made us to know that not all heaven are currently peaceful like the second heaven, unlike the third heaven where God dwell in holiness.
